The general public is invited to provide feedback on proposals to improve Penistone Station (this includes (including volunteers and community groups).

Barnsley MBC will be carrying out the improvements and there will be consultations in advance. The following is taken from their site:

Penistone station footbridge and car park schem

Project status: In development

Project overview

We’re seeking feedback on proposals to deliver a fully accessible footbridge between the platforms at Penistone Station as well as a new park and ride site to the east of the station, behind platform 1 and accessed from Lairds Way. The scheme aims to provide a safer, fully accessible and well-integrated station environment at Penistone, increasing rail use by removing safety constraints, improving step free access and expanding park and ride capacity to support sustainable travel choices.

The scheme is to be funded by UK Government via the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). This scheme will be delivered in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

Proposals

The scheme proposes to:

  • install footbridge with lifts between platforms
  • construct an approximate 100 space car park to the land off Lairds way to the east of the rail track
  • remove the existing crossing facility between the platforms
  • reconfigure the existing car park facilities to the west of the rail track

Projected Timeline

Planning application submission – Autumn 2026
Outline business case submission – Autumn 2026
Full business case submission (final funding approval) – Spring 2027
Anticipated construction period – Approximately 1 year commencing Spring 2027

Plans

Plans to be made available by 15 June 2026
