The Democratic Process
Local democracy works best when everyone in the community understands how they can get involved, raise concerns and help shape the future of Penistone. Penistone Town Council encourages residents to take an active interest in local decision‑making and to use their democratic rights throughout the year, not only at election time.
Penistone is represented by a group of 15 elected councillors across the 5 wards, Penistone, Hoyandswaine, Cubley, Thurlstone & Millhouse Green who collectively as volunteers, make decisions on local services, facilities and priorities. These councillors are members of these community themselves, and anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can stand for election. Residents are encouraged to identify people they believe would make good councillors and to support them in putting themselves forward. Nomination forms are available from Barnsley MBC during election periods, and guidance is published on the council website to help potential candidates understand the process.
How to vote
To vote in local elections, residents must be registered on the electoral roll. Registration is quick and can be completed online at any time. Voting gives people the opportunity to choose councillors who will represent their interests, raise local issues on their behalf and make decisions about community facilities, budgets and priorities. Every vote contributes to shaping the future of the town. Although the Councillors powers are limited collectively to the Assets they manage, these can bring great benefits to the town centre in shaping and enriching community events and bringing people of the town and its surrounding villages together.
Transparency
The council promotes transparency by publishing agendas, minutes, policies and financial information on its website. Residents can attend council meetings, observe discussions and, where appropriate, speak during public participation sessions. This helps people understand how decisions are made and ensures councillors remain accountable to the community.
Get involved
There are many ways to get involved outside of elections. Residents can respond to consultations, join community groups, attend events, volunteer, or speak directly with councillors and staff. The council also engages with the community through market‑day outreach, social media updates, the community centre, the Paramount Cinema and partnerships with local organisations.
Local democracy belongs to everyone. Whether by voting, standing for election, attending meetings or simply sharing views with councillors, every resident has a role in shaping Penistone’s future. The council encourages all members of the community to take part, stay informed and make their voices heard.
